Hi everybody, it’s Jenny from the MSQC. And we had such a great response when we used the cake mix recipes the first time. And I am in love with them to be honest. And so I wanted to do another one for you. This one is out of the second packet. And we are doing block five right here. So to make this quilt, what you’re going to need is one packet of ten inch squares. And we’ve used Howdy from Moda. You’re also going to need one packet (42) ten inch background squares as well. You’re going to need one of these cake mix recipe books. And, oh border. I almost forgot the border. So your inner border right here, half a yard. Your outer border a yard and a half. . And that’s a nice big six inch border. So it makes a really good size quilt. The quilt we’re talking about is 63 by 70, about. You know so it’s just a good size. So let me show you how to do this because I love these. These are genius. I have to say, I wish I’d thought of these because these are so cool.

So what you’re going to do is you’re going to put, take your two layer cake squares. You’re going to have your colored one and your background one. And you’re going to put them right sides together . Then you’re going to layer your paper on the top right here. Now on the paper, if you’ve not seen these before, these are so cool. There’s little numbers and there will be a star where you start. And so right here start. And there’s little arrows. And you’re going to start, this is number one. And you’re going to sew one, two, three, four. You’re just going to follow the numbers and go all the way around. Once the numbers are all sewn then you get to cut it out. Now my numbers are all sewn. The cool thing about this pattern, this particular block is that every time you sew one of these you get two blocks. So let’s go ahead and cut this apart. So you want to be sure and read the directions on here because sometimes it will say, it will tell you just where to start cutting. This one looks like, it looks like you can start anywhere you want. So I’m actually going to start by cutting on these outer lines right here. So I’m just going to line my ruler up on those and cut. And then I’m going to turn it here. The fun thing about this is that you get perfect blocks without ever having to square anything. They’re just as perfect as they can be which I’m not a fan of squaring up. So mine are either a little wonky. Or they’re going to be perfect like this. Alright so now I can cut, I’m going to cut this long piece right here. The least amount of cuts we can do. So we’re going to cut this long one right here. And then I have these two halves. And I’m going to go ahead, the solid lines are the lines you cut on. And so you want to remember that. And we’re just going to go ahead and cut our whole thing up. Alrighty.

Now we’ve got these all cut up. And look how little waste. I mean just tiny little pieces. So, so good because I don’t love waste. And you know I’m just going to put those down there in that drawer. Now one of the things, one of the little tips that we give you or that they give you on the paper is to shorten your stitch length a little bit so that it makes it easier to pull this paper off. I like to fold mine back and then look at that, it just comes right off. And so we’re going to do this to our papers. And I’m just, I’m just going to do it to four because I want to show you one block. You get two blocks, remember, from these. So we’re going to pull all our paper off here. And this one just comes so easy. And sometimes I like to let my little grandchildren pull these apart because you know, I could be sewing.

Alright so now let’s go over to the iron and we’re going to set these seams. And we’re just going to iron them back. We’re going to lay our dark piece on the top and iron the, the dark side, the seam is going to be hidden under the dark fabric. So we’re ironing to the dark side. Ok so looking at these I’m going to need five of these blocks, each one little block. So I’m going to grab one more and iron it. And then we’ll put it together over here and I’ll show you how to do that. Now I’m a little angley challenged so once you get one together you want to keep it close by so you can look at it, make them all the same. And so I’m going to use my, my recipe card here for a picture. And the first block I’m setting as my big one with the white to the bottom. And then this one is going to have the white touching the square like that. Then all of these are going to line up this way. With the color to the color. And then this way also with the color to the color like this. And it makes this little, this little tiny bear paw block which I think is so cute.

And so what we’re going to do, how we’re going to sew this together is we’re going to sew these two and then we’ll attach it to this big square. So let’s go over and do that. We’re just going to sew quarter of an inch. And we’re going to press this open. And then we’ll attach it to our big square. There we go. So now this should fit right on the top of this and it does, like a little bit of magic. I love it when a plan comes together. It worked, it worked. Alrighty, here we go. Sewing right down the side. There we go. Alright now we’re going to iron this open. And the other pieces will go along the other edge. Now I’m going to relax this and roll it back. A shot of steam for good luck. Alright so then we’re going to put this side block together over here. So we’ve got these two and this one going the opposite way. So first we’re going to start with these because I don’t want to get turned around. I’m going to start with these two and I’m just going to sew a quarter of an inch down the side. I would always rather make sure than have to pick. You know I don’t want to rip out. So now I come back and I lay this in here to make sure it’s right. Put this one in here, fold it back and we’ll sew that on. Then we’ll be able to attach this whole thing to the side of our block and our block will be done. Alright let’s press this back. Nice and flat. And now we can lay this on this side and sew this block together. Alrighty. There we go. And we’re going to press this open. So then you’ve got your block all finished and done and it’s ready to go, these perfect little blocks.

So let’s take a look at the quilt behind me. So we have seven across, eight rows down. So that’s 56 blocks. Now we pulled some of the lighter blocks out and only used the darker contrasting blocks with these because we wanted these to show up on these. So there’s only, we only used 56 little blocks out of there so there’s some leftover. And with the leftover, because they’re light, I actually, we thought about putting them on a darker solid rather than using the white. We thought about using the lighter ones with the darker solid. And it would show up completely different. So that will be fun. You can do that with your other ones. For us we just wanted to use the dark ones with the light background. We went with the quilt and used 56 of the blocks.

Now when you’re ready to put these together you’re just going to lay them together just like this. Now remember you can make any single block that’s on this whole thing, you can set these different ways. You can do all sorts of things. We put ours all going the same direction, just like this. And it’s just as cute as it can be. We want to switch some of these around so we don’t have matchers. There we go. And it just comes out as cute as it can be, just sewing them straight together like that. And see they all point up and it just looks so cute. When you put your rows together you’re just going to put them together just like that. There’s no sashing, nothing goes in there. It’s just so easy. You’ll add your first little 2 ½ border. You’ll add your last border and your quilt is done and ready to go.

So just remember that from every single one of these papers right here you get two blocks which I think it really cool. So we hope you enjoyed this, and we hope you enjoyed this tutorial on the Tea Cakes quilt from the MSQC.
