So, How Do I Start Quilting?

The journey of any quilt begins with a single stitch - and you are in the exact right place to get started on your quilting adventure! Let us simplify the process for you:

1. Find the tools and supplies you need. There are many quilting supplies that are nice to have, but not necessary to get started. At the most basic, you will need a pattern, fabric, sewing pins, quilting thread, sewing needles, fabric scissors and/or a rotary cutter (make sure you have a self-healing cutting mat to go with your rotary cutter!), and - of course! - a sewing machine.

  1.
  2. 2. Choose your pattern. Make sure you pick one that includes a free quilting tutorial on the Missouri Star quilting channel! We offer a wide range of beginner quilt patterns that are perfect when you’re just starting out. A dazzling quilt starts with a great pattern, and you’ll find hundreds at Missouri Star. From holiday and baby quilt patterns to charm pack and layer cake patterns, our website is bursting with ideas for beginner quilt projects and more challenging endeavors as well. You’ll also discover books about patchwork for beginners, rulers and tools, quilt kits, patterns, and many types of quilting fabric that are perfect for your first quilt.
  3.
  4. 3. Cut your fabric. Following the instructions in your chosen pattern, cut your fabric pieces for each quilt block (also sometimes referred to as patchwork). TIP: Make sure to watch Quilting 101: Pressing vs. Ironing for tips on pressing your fabric pieces throughout the quilting process!
  5.
  6. 4. Make your quilt blocks. Sew your fabric pieces (or patchwork) together into each block as instructed. Watch this tutorial video to learn how to sew straight seams with a scant 1/4 inch seam. TIP: Check out Quilting 101: 1/4" vs. Scant 1/4" for handy tips on sewing quarter inch seams.
  7.
  8. 5. Assemble your quilt top. In this step, you will sew all of your quilt blocks together as instructed.
  9.
  10. 6. Quilt finishing. If you’re just getting started, we recommend using a local quilt finisher or our own mail in machine quilting service to finish your quilt! Quilt finishing is the process where your quilt top and backing are sewn together with a layer of soft & fluffy batting in between (we call this a quilt sandwich!). A longarm quilting service can save you time and frustration when you’re just getting started, and they will also have lots of unique quilting stitch patterns to choose from, as well as add-on services such as quilt binding (which can also save you time & frustration!).
