A tone on tone fabric (ToT fabric) is a fabric printed with two or more tints or shades of the same color. Tone on tone fabric is popular among quilters for use as a blender fabric–a non-directional fabric with a small print. A blender reads as a solid from a distance.
Now you might be wondering, “If a tone on tone fabric reads as a solid, why not just use a solid fabric?” The answer has to do with texture, one of the seven elements of art.
There are two types of texture–physical and visual; both come into play when working with fabric. Physical texture is what you can feel with your hands. Corduroy, flannel, quilting cotton, and silk all feel very different between your fingers; they have unique physical textures. Visual texture is often called implied texture or the illusion of texture–what you see with your eyes suggests to your brain the way that something might feel.
Tone on tone fabrics for quilting are often chosen over solid fabrics because they add visual texture to a quilt. Because they are not busy–like the colorful prints you choose for your quilt–they don’t pull focus from the primary design. Adding color and texture–but not detracting from the focal point–is what makes tone on tones work well as blender fabrics for quilting.
