What Is a Layer Cake?
A layer cake is a bundle of 10" x 10" precut fabric squares from one fabric collection. Most layer cakes contain 42 squares, which works out to roughly 2¾ yards of fabric. You'll find layer cakes in quilting cotton, batiks, flannels and solids like Kona Cotton, so there's a bundle for every style, from modern to traditional to holiday.
Why Quilters Love Layer Cakes
Big pieces, fast quilts. A 10" square is four times the size of a 5" charm square, so large prints stay visible and big blocks come together quickly.
No color guesswork. The designer has already matched the whole line, which makes a layer cake an easy first quilt for beginners and a quick finish for experienced quilters.
Endlessly flexible. Sew the squares as-is, or cut them into half-square triangles, 5" squares or 2.5" strips. One layer cake can stand in for several smaller precuts.
Why "Layer Cakes"? Other Names for 10" Fabric Squares
"Layer cake" is Moda Fabrics' name for its 10" precut squares, but it's the name most quilters know and search for, and Missouri Star has used it in tutorials for years. Other fabric makers call the same 10" square bundle something different, and you'll find all of them here:

How many squares are in a layer cake?
Most layer cakes have 42 squares of 10" x 10" fabric. A few bundles have fewer or more, so check the product description for the exact count.
How much fabric is in a layer cake?
A 42-square layer cake is about 2¾ yards of fabric in total.
How many layer cakes do I need for a quilt?
Sewn as simple patchwork (9.5" finished squares), one layer cake makes a lap or throw quilt top of about 57" x 66". Plan on two layer cakes for a twin and three for a queen. Your pattern, sashing and borders can change that, and borders and binding usually need extra yardage.
What's the difference between a layer cake and a charm pack?
Size. Layer cakes are 10" squares and charm packs are 5" squares, so one layer cake square can be cut into four charm squares. Jelly rolls are 2.5" strips from the same kinds of fabric lines.
Are 10x10 fabric squares the same as a layer cake?
Yes. Any bundle of 10" x 10" precut squares, whether it's called Tiles, Ten Squares, Stacks, Sundaes or 10" Squares, can be used in a layer cake pattern.
Should I prewash a layer cake?
We don't recommend it. Precut squares can fray and shrink unevenly in the wash. If you're worried about dark colors bleeding, add a color-catcher sheet when you wash the finished quilt.
