Charm Pack Quilt Patterns: Easy Projects to Sew Today

Charm packs are one of the most popular precuts in quilting — and for good reason! These bundles of coordinated 5" squares take the guesswork out of fabric selection and let you dive straight into sewing. Whether you're a brand-new quilter or a seasoned pro looking for a quick project, charm pack quilts deliver beautiful results with minimal prep work.

We've rounded up some of our favorite charm pack quilt patterns from Missouri Star Quilt Company, complete with video tutorials from Jenny Doan. Grab a charm pack and let's get sewing!

What Is a Charm Pack?

A charm pack is a bundle of precut 5" × 5" fabric squares, usually containing 42 squares from a single fabric collection. Each square features a different print, so you get a perfectly coordinated mix of colors and patterns without buying individual yardage. Charm packs are perfect for patchwork, mosaics, and any quilt design that uses small squares.

1. Easy Charm Pack Quilt for Beginners

This is the perfect first quilt! Jenny Doan shows you how to sew charm squares together into a simple patchwork quilt — no complicated cutting, no tricky piecing. Just sew squares together in rows, nest your seams, and you've got a beautiful twin-size quilt.

What you'll need: 5 charm packs, plus 2½" strips for inner border and 5½" strips for outer border.

The technique: Sew squares into pairs, then pairs into four-patches, and keep extending until you reach your desired size. The key is nesting your seams — press seam allowances in opposite directions on alternating rows so they lock together for perfect alignment.

💡 Pro tip: Pin right where the seams meet to lock them in place. Your corners will match up every time!

2. Falling Charms Quilt

Falling Charms quilt tutorial

The Falling Charms quilt creates a gorgeous tumbling effect that looks complex but is surprisingly simple to make. Jenny Doan shows how to chain-piece charm squares onto jelly roll strips, creating angled blocks that cascade down the quilt.

What you'll need: 4 charm packs (or a layer cake cut into fourths), plus about 3 yards of coordinating fabric cut into 2½" strips (or one jelly roll).

The technique: Lay a jelly roll strip on the sewing machine and chain-piece charm squares onto it, one after another, without cutting the strip. Then sew a second strip on the other side, trim, and press. The blocks come out with a charming angled look. Alternate the direction of the "corner" on each row to create that beautiful falling pattern.

💡 Pro tip: Chain piecing is the secret to speed here — don't cut the strip between squares. Sew them all on in one continuous run, then trim apart.

3. Crown Jewel Quilt

Crown Jewel quilt tutorial

Ready for something a little more dramatic? The Crown Jewel quilt uses charm squares combined with half square triangles and a four-patch center to create a stunning block that sparkles. Jenny shows how to use the "sew on the line" technique to make precise mini HSTs from charm squares cut into quarters.

What you'll need: 1 charm pack, 10" squares of a complementary fabric (for HSTs), and background fabric (10" squares and 2½" squares).

The technique: Cut each charm square into four 2½" pieces. Draw a diagonal line on two pieces, pair them with background squares, and sew directly on the line. Trim ¼" from the seam for perfect 2½" HSTs. Combine with a four-patch center and large HST corners for a block that looks like a jeweled crown.

💡 Pro tip: Sewing right ON the line (instead of next to it) gives you more precise HSTs at this small scale. Your 2½" units come out exact every time.
