Quilt as a Family - 5 At-Home Kid Friendly Projects

Many of us learned how to sew from our parents and grandparents. Quilting has long served as a wonderful family tradition, stitching together our hobbies with our home lives and creating incredible memories for generations to come. Now more than ever, families are looking for a way to bond together and quilting deserves to be recognized as a fantastic option for family togetherness.

The Missouri Star Quilt Company is first and foremost, a family company. The Doan family built Quilt Town USA from the ground up, coming together when the individuals in their family needed it most. Now it's time to pass that knowledge on in your own home, share one of these great projects with the children in your life and light that spark of creation to inspire them for years to come.

No Sew Fleece Tie Pillowcase

Let's start with the basics! Sometimes sewing can be an intimidating task, especially for younger children with no experience behind a sewing machine. The No Sew Fleece Tie Pillowcase is a fun, simple project that requires no sewing and only basic cutting skills!

There are SEW many options for fabric when it comes to this project! For comfort, consider an extra snuggly fleece fabric as Jenny uses in her tutorial with her grandson Ezra. As we know though, children love items from their favorite movies and television shows! Check out our incredible selection of licensed and brand fabrics to make this pillow even more special!

Embroider Buddy

Sometimes interest is the key to inspiration. Getting kids to sit down and pay attention might require a little bit of inspiration, especially for those who may not have ever shown interest in fabric crafts. While the Embroider Buddy may require more work on your part, it creates a lasting, personalized gift that your child will treasure!

Although any stuffed animal can be used, the Embroider Buddy is specialized for easy and quick sewing! Simply remove the stuffing container from the zip up pouch and embellish your favorite design, or even your child's name, directly onto the stuffed animal! Not only will you create something that will be cherished, but hopefully that customized gift will garner enough attention that you'll be teaching the children in your life how to start their own projects sooner rather than later!

The opportunities are limitless with this design as any fabric can make a beautiful and fun skirt! Go traditional with a solid or even plaid fabric, or mix things up and go bold with a bright modern design! This ones all for fun, so sit back and let your little one decide which fabric looks like the most fun and help teach a valuable sewing lesson along the way!

Candy Bag Zipper Pouch

Snack time is important for everyone involved! Although healthier options are always the best decision, every now and then a little chocolate can really save the day! Before you throw out those old candy bags though, consider turning them into a fun at-home project that requires no more than a visit to your fabric stash!

If you don't have a sweet tooth (lucky you), a fat quarter will make the perfect bag as well! Consider a beautiful batik for a vibrant, unique bag that will certainly draw attention. Beyond that, all you'll need for this project is your bag material, Heat N Bond Iron on Vinyl, a scrap of batting or fusible fleece and a zipper!

Easy Elephant Applique Quilt

They grow up so fast! There's nothing more magical than your first quilt and having the opportunity to guide your young quilter through their first stitches is truly a blessing. Eventually, it's time to give the keys to the machine over to your child and let them create their first full quilt! The Easy Elephant Applique Quilt is an incredible first project consisting of simple, applique blocks that will teach your learner all the basics of creating a quilt!

Jenny loved this project so much that the pattern is available completely free! If your family isn't fond of elephants though, all you need is a basic printed stencil of your favorite animal or object and you're ready to go! Pick up your favorite pack of 10" squares and some Heat-N-Bond Feather Weight White Yardage and you're ready to quilt!

Remember, at this point in someone's sewing career, it's time to let them make their own mistakes and guide rather than instruct! We know it's hard to do, but you'll be surprised by just how creative your kids can be!
