What exactly are applique pins? Well, appliqué pins are literally just extra fine pins specifically used for applique projects. What quilters love most about applique pins is how they can be safely ironed over as applique requires a lot of ironing, and not all pins are heat-resistant, which explains the appeal of applique pins!
If appliqué isn’t your forte yet, you’d probably like to know how you use applique pins. For most appliqué projects, appliqué pins are used to temporarily pin pieces of fabric together while you work, whereas appliqué needles and milliner needles are for the actual stitching of your appliqué project. Extra fine pins are handy for keeping your materials in place because they’re thin enough to stay out of your way, and strong enough to hold your fabric together.
Since we’re on the topic of size, you’ll also want to know what size applique pins are. Not all appliqué pins are the same size, appliqué pins range from shorter ¾” pins to pins that are a bit longer at 1”. Use whichever size works best for your projects. They also come in a variety of thicknesses, from extra fine on up.
Your next question may be about the best appliqué needles; there really is no reigning champion of quality needles, but there are high quality brands. Some of our favorite brands of hand appliqué needles include Bohin, Clover, Roxanne Needles, and Richard Hemming needles. You’ll also find Bohin appliqué needles and of course, Bohin milliner needles too.
