When you hear the word "polyester" you may think of the 1970s, but polyester is back and better than ever! Polyester thread is strong and smooth, perfect for embroidery. And polyester batting is perfect for high loft quilts, especially for those with allergies. It washes up beautifully every time! And don't forget about polyester fabric. It's soft, cuddly, and makes quilts that will last a lifetime or longer.
Polyester
If you conjure an image of a light blue leisure suit when you hear the words polyester fabric, you need to take a look at the many types of polyester fabric available today!
So, what is polyester fabric? Modern polyester has come a long way, baby, from the 1970’s stuff we all knew (or heard about). Polyester is a plastic made from petroleum–that hasn’t changed. But technological advances have made it soft, supple, and lightweight. The list of polyester fabric characteristics include: easy-care, durable, moisture-wicking, elastic, versatile, water-resistant, and low-cost.
Missouri Star offers a variety of polyester fabric by the yard, including polyester dress fabric such as faux dupioni and micro stretch jersey. Ponte knit, faux leather, and scuba knit are other high quality polyester fabric choices for casual apparel, sportswear, and home furnishings. You will also find polyester thread and polyester zippers to complement the projects you make with 100% polyester fabric.
Is polyester better than cotton? The answer to that question is in the eye of the beholder or, in this case, the body of the wearer. The primary complaint about polyester is that its plastic fibers don’t facilitate airflow. This is why polyester blend fabric, such as polyester and cotton, is so popular.
Which is better, cotton or polyester thread? The choice here will depend upon the project and the preference of the sewist. Many sewists want to know, is polyester sewing thread strong? Yes, polyester thread is stronger and less susceptible to breaking than cotton thread. For this reason, sewists often use polyester thread no matter the fabric content of a project. Conversely, it is not wise to use cotton thread with polyester fabric because it is likely to break as polyester fabric stretches. Missouri Star can meet your needs with both cotton and polyester thread for quilting.
Like fabric for apparel and quilts, the two most common fibers used for quilt batting are cotton and polyester. Polyester quilt batting is lightweight, warm, and resists mold and mildew. You may have heard the term high loft polyester batting; loft refers to the thickness of the batting. An advantage of polyester batting is that adding thickness does not mean adding weight. A disadvantage of polyester batting is that it is not breathable–one of the reasons cotton and poly are often blending in quilt batting.
Missouri Star provides polyester batting for quilts of every size. In addition, you will find polyester batting by the yard and polyester quilt batting by the roll suitable for a wide variety of projects.
Polyester is not the same stuff it was in the days of disco. If you want to give it a try, Missouri Star has a polyester batting roll for your quilt or polyester fabric for sale that has your name on it–you could even choose light blue!
