The cynics among us claim that Valentine’s Day was created by restaurateurs and purveyors of greeting cards, chocolates, and flowers. The Roman Catholics among us probably know that Valentine’s Day is actually Saint Valentine’s Day–the feast day of a third century martyr. But did you know that English poet Geoffrey Chaucer is the first person who associated St. Valentine’s Feast Day with romantic love? In his 1375 poem “Parliament of Fools” Chaucer* wrote, “For this was sent on Saint Valentine's day / When every fool cometh there to choose his mate.” There you go cynics–blame Chaucer!

And this is nifty… The pattern includes instructions for a table runner constructed from the leftovers! Two Valentine’s gifts! (Or maybe you could keep the table runner to decorate your own home.)
Speaking of home decor… You might like the Love Bench Pillow. This pattern features two pillows–one bench shaped and one square shaped. Both require Valentine fabric by the yard or solid fabric in whatever colors best express your love.
Here’s an interesting spin on Valentine's Day fabric by the yard… Both Timeless Treasures and Kanvas Studio produce fabric prints that feature chocolates! This is a way to give your Valentine a sweet treat without the calories! Imagine a pieced quilt project with some chocolate prints in the mix. Delicious! These prints would also make yummy zipper pouches, tote bags, table runners, and aprons.

Valentinus was a Latin name meaning worthy, strong, and powerful; it was popular between the second and eighth centuries. There are actually about a dozen Roman Catholic saints named Valentine–not just one. Because there are many St. Valentines, you can celebrate Valentine’s Day on January 7th, February 14th, and November 3rd. You can also celebrate St. Valentina–a woman–on July 25th! If you are Eastern Orthodox, you can celebrate St. Valentine on both July 6th and July 30th. No matter when you observe Valentine’s Day, we are happy to help you express your love for the important people in your life.
