In 1897, Queen Victoria celebrated 60 years of being queen of the British Empire: her Diamond Jubilee. Folks took it as an opportunity to party like they’d never partied before, and they came up with some pretty interesting ways to celebrate:
Men participated in “Cigar and Umbrella Races,” competitions where you must complete a course while keeping your umbrella open and your cigar lit. One town released a balloon shaped like the queen from the church tower. Tightrope walkers held a mid-air picnic! Some towns threw bonfires with beacons built 60-feet tall.
