Established in 1983, Aurifil is an accomplished Italian company based near Milano, with a full-grown experience in producing superior quality cotton threads for professional and domestic quilters. Aurifil threads are made from Long Staple Egyptian Mako cotton.
The 50 weight Mako cotton thread is the most popular and versatile thread. It is ideal for hand piecing and hand appliqué especially when using the needle turn method. It also perfect for machine appliqué when you want the fabric to be the feature rather than the thread - the thread looks like it "melts" into the fabric, use straight, small zig zag, and blanket stitches. Use for very detailed machine quilting with a lot of backtracking such as feathers and heavy background quilting . Perfect for quilting that creates texture when you don’t necessarily want to see the quilting lines. Use an 80/12 Sharp/Microtex, denim or top stitching needle for best results.

Aurifil large spool

I always remind quilters that though the Aurifil spool seems expensive, the yardage is much more than on lesser brands spools so you get more sewing for you money. The weight also means more sewing time per bobbin and more accurate 1/4" seams because the fine thread takes up less space in the seam. And the thread is much "cleaner" resulting in less dust in your machine. Love Aurifil.

Versatile Thres

My "go to" Thread

I love the Auriful 50 wt Cotton thread for piecing. It is thin but strong. The weight can make a difference when keeping a perfect 1/4" seam allowance.

Quality Thread, Though wound Different

I love the thread, but the way it is wound causes there to be an occasional slack that caused feeding problems. I countered this by winding bobbins to use instead of the big spool. Other than the feeding problem I have only good things to say about the thread itself.
