Great purple

Beautiful color!

Fabric has strong chemical smell and an odd Feel to it . Is this common with Batiks? It feels like it has to be washed before sewing it? I am afraid of color running if I don’t The quilt front will be made with 5” precuts which I won’t prewash, Should I not make a quilt if only back is pre washed? Any support is appreciated. New to quilting!
