Put a Label on It: Why Every Quilt Needs a Label

Every quilt tells a story, but without a quilt label, that story can be lost to time. Whether you are gifting a handmade heirloom to a loved one or donating a masterpiece to charity, adding a personalized tag is the best way to preserve its history for future generations. From documenting the maker’s name and date to sharing heartfelt messages, quilt labeling ensures your hard work is never forgotten. Discover the importance of documenting your projects and explore easy ways to add professional-looking labels—including the new Labels of Love collection—in this guide to finishing your quilts with a personal touch.

Why Do I Even Need a Quilt Label?

We make so many quilts over our lifetimes and share them with our loved ones, friends, neighbors or even strangers we may have never met. These quilts can pass from hand to hand, down through generations. How do we preserve the story of each quilt? The answer is with a quilt label.

Quilt labels commonly include information about who the quilt is for, the quilt maker, if there was a particular occasion the quilt commemorates, and the date when the quilt was made. It can also include quotes, a bit about why the quilt was made, what materials were used, or other information the maker wants to share. All of this information helps carry the story of each quilt to each person who owns the quilt.

While adding this information to each of your quilts sounds daunting, there are so many options! Keep reading to learn more about labeling your quilts.

Label it with Labels Of Love

One of the easiest ways to add a label to your quilt is to buy pre-printed fabric quilt labels and just add them to the quilts you make. And Missouri Star has a whole new collection dedicated to this: Labels of Love.

Labels of Love are differently themed packages of quilt labels that make labeling quilts easy! When you purchase a package, you’ll get 8 pre-folded double-sided tags (3 icons and 5 fun sayings) as well as 2 single-sided write-on labels where you can add all the important details to your quilt with a permanent marker. Add one or multiple labels to each of your projects (they’re not just for quilts) as you’re binding them to surprise and delight the recipient!

Choose from a variety of themes depending on what kind of quilt you’re making. Go for some garden beauty with Ingrid’s Wildflowers. Or go Bold and Bright with some striking designs. Anyone up for a little Sweet and Sassy? Coordinate with other project kits including Misty’s Favorite Things or our Sweet Meadow embroidery for kids and babies. No matter which pack you choose, you’re sure to love these. We bet you can’t choose just one!

Create Your Own Quilt Label

If you’re keen on making your own custom quilt labels, there’s nothing that says you can’t! A few years ago, Missouri Star collaborated with calligraphy artist and fabric designer Amy Latta to develop a series of videos helping you doodle your way to adorable personalized quilt labels. You can find the whole YouTube playlist here, and you’ll see tons of quilt label examples to get you started. You’ll just need some plain fabric (layer cake squares are perfect!) and permanent fabric markers in a variety of colors.

We can’t wait to see what quilt labels you use and create!
