How Missouri Star embroidery panels work

Every Missouri Star embroidery panel is 100% cotton, about 42" x 44", with the design printed in a wash-away print. In the package you get the panel, embroidery instructions and a pattern for adding pieced charm-square borders. There's also a customizable quilt label printed on the panel. With borders added, the finished wall hanging measures 31 1/2" x 38 1/2", and the two pillows finish at 18" x 18".

The designs are mostly outline work in stem stitch and French knots, so they're a good first big project if you're new to hand embroidery. Natalie walks through one start to finish in the Easy to Embroider Panels tutorial.

What you'll need besides the panel

  • Thread: each sample uses 4 to 6 ten-gram balls of Missouri Star #8 perle cotton. Every product page lists the exact colors.
  • Border fabric: the samples use two 5" charm packs, and the product page names the collection used. Some designs also call for 1/4 to 1 yard of accent or inner border fabric.
  • Backing: 2 3/4 to 3 1/2 yards, depending on the design.
  • Tools: an embroidery hoop and needles from our embroidery notions.

Stick & stitch embroidery designs

Want to stitch something smaller? Stick & stitch packs, like the Jolly Santa collections, print six designs on 8 1/2" x 11" sheets of dissolving stabilizer. Peel one off, stick it to a tea towel or tote, stitch right through it, then rinse the stabilizer away. Embroidery panel FAQ

Is thread included with the embroidery panels?

No. You get the panel, the stitch instructions and the border pattern. Thread and charm packs are sold separately. Order the perle cotton along with your panel, because popular colors can sell out. If one is out, any #8 perle cotton or 6-strand floss in a similar shade will work.

Are embroidery panels good for beginners?

Yes. The designs are mostly outlines in stem stitch and French knots, and the stitch lines are already printed for you. Many reviewers say it's their first embroidery project in years, or their first panel ever.

Does the printed design wash out?

Yes, it's a wash-away print. Stitch over the lines, then wash the finished piece as the included instructions describe and the leftover printing rinses out.

What can I make with one panel?

The pattern makes a 31 1/2" x 38 1/2" wall hanging and two 18" pillows. Customers have also added extra borders to make lap quilts and throws, or used the smaller motifs for table runners. There's a quilt label on the panel too, so it makes a good gift.

Is the fabric hard to stitch with perle cotton?

#8 perle cotton is thicker than one strand of floss, so use a crewel or chenille needle with a larger eye. Keep the fabric tight in a hoop. The needle opens a bigger hole and the thread pulls through much more easily.
