Baby Quilt Kits – Precut Crib & Kids Quilt Kits

Why Start with a Baby Quilt Kit?

A baby blanket is one of the first projects many quilters make, and it’s easy to see why. It’s small enough to finish quickly, and a handmade quilt is a gift a family keeps for years. A kit takes the guesswork out of it: the fabrics are chosen to go together, many pieces come precut, and the instructions walk you from cutting to binding. You’ll find themes for every nursery, from farm animals, lambs and bunnies to cowboys, dinosaurs, race cars, bees and florals.

Cuddle® Kits vs. Cotton Quilt Kits

Cuddle® kits use Shannon Fabrics’ plush minky in stripes, prints and textured furs. They’re the softest option and a favorite baby shower gift. Most come precut, so you’re sewing in an afternoon. Cuddle stretches and sheds when it’s cut, so it takes a little more care than cotton (see the FAQs below). Our Cuddle range also includes small Wee One lovey kits, Cuddle Critter stuffed animals and pillowcase kits.

Cotton quilt kits are traditional pieced quilts in cheerful prints, a good pick if you’re new to quilting or want to practice piecing and quilting. Check each listing for what’s included, and add crib-size batting if your kit needs it.

What Size Is a Baby Quilt?

Most baby quilts land between 30” x 40” and a 36” x 52” crib size. That’s big enough for tummy time or the stroller and small enough to wash easily. Loveys and Wee One kits are smaller, made for little hands to carry around. Our crib quilt size guide compares baby, crib and toddler dimensions. Making your own from precuts? Two packs of 5” fabric squares make most simple baby quilts.

Baby Quilt Kit FAQs

Does Cuddle® fabric shed when you cut it?+

Yes. The cut edges of minky and faux fur shed a lot of fluff at first. Customers say the fix is the tip in the kit instructions: tumble the cut pieces in the dryer (no heat) for a few minutes before you sew. Keep a lint roller and your vacuum handy, and clean out your machine’s bobbin area when you’re done.

What machine setup works best for sewing Cuddle®?+

Kit instructions call for a walking foot and a stretch stitch or slightly longer stitch length to keep the layers feeding evenly. Check your machine manual first, since some machines advise against using a walking foot with stitches that move backward. Sew slowly and test your settings on a scrap.

How do I keep Cuddle® from slipping, especially on the binding?+

Use clips instead of pins. Reviewers found that pinned Cuddle still shifts and narrow strips can roll, especially on the binding. Plenty of Wonder Clips hold the plush layers flat without leaving holes.

How big are the Wee One kits?+

Wee One kits make a small lovey-size blanket, around 27” square. Customers love them as a carry-around blankie, but several say they’re smaller than expected. For a crib-size quilt, choose a larger Cuddle or cotton kit, or combine two Wee One kits.

Are baby quilt kits good for beginners?+

Yes. Cotton kits are the easiest place to start. Cuddle kits are quick, but plush fabric takes some practice, so first-timers should go slowly. Many kits point to a video tutorial on the box or listing, and reviewers say watching it first made the steps much clearer. It also helps to measure your precut pieces before you start, so you can trim anything that needs squaring up.
