Embroidery Kits – Hand Embroidery Kits for Beginners & Beyond

Embroidery adds a handmade touch to your quilts, home decor and gifts. A good kit takes the guesswork out of getting started: pick a design you love, and everything you need to stitch it is already in the box.

What's in an Embroidery Kit?

Most hand embroidery kits include a fabric base (often pre-printed with the design), a set of embroidery floss, needles and usually a hoop to keep your fabric taut. Missouri Star kits go a step further with notions like needle minders, embroidery scissors and Peel & Stitch wash-away designs, so they work for first-timers and experienced stitchers alike.

How to Choose an Embroidery Kit

1. Pick Your Embroidery Style

  • Stamped kits: The design is printed right on the fabric, so you stitch over the lines with nothing to transfer. A great place to start.
  • Peel & Stitch / stick-and-stitch kits: Stick the wash-away design onto any fabric, stitch through it, and rinse it away.
  • Redwork kits: Classic one-color outline embroidery, from nativity sets to Santa and table toppers.
  • Punch needle kits: Faster and more textured, with a plush, loopy finish that's easy to learn.
  • 3D and stumpwork kits: Raised petals, beaded berries and snails that stand off the fabric, for when you want a challenge.

2. Match Your Skill Level

  • Beginner embroidery kits: Simpler designs with step-by-step instructions for the basics: backstitch, stem stitch, satin stitch and French knots. Look for stitch samplers and our Missouri Star "Learn Embroidery" kit. Jessica Long Embroidery kits also come with clear guidance.
  • Intermediate and advanced kits: Bothy Threads and Hawthorn Handmade designs bring in stumpwork, beadwork and blended threads for frame-worthy pieces.

3. Think About the Finished Project

  • Wall art: Many kits include a hoop that doubles as the frame.
  • Home decor: Tea towel, pillowcase and table topper kits add vintage charm.
  • Quilting accents: Embroidered quilt blocks and charm squares sew straight into your next quilt top.
  • Ornaments and gifts: Small felt and punch needle kits make quick handmade gifts. See our holiday and Christmas embroidery kits.

We carry kits from Missouri Star (exclusives designed by us), Kimberbell Designs, Jessica Long Embroidery, The Posy Collection, Design Works Crafts, Kate Wyatt Fine Art, Kiriki Press (DIY embroidered doll kits), Hawthorn Handmade, Bothy Threads and more. New designs land in new embroidery kits.

Embroidery Kit FAQ

Which embroidery kit is best for a complete beginner?+

Start with Learn Embroidery Stitch by Stitch with Missouri Star. It teaches 11 stitches with 9 Peel & Stitch designs and comes with a 7" hoop, DMC floss, needles, a needle threader, scissors and a cotton tea towel to practice on. Customers often buy it for a granddaughter or an adult daughter who wants to learn, and many watch a stitch video alongside the booklet the first time through.

Does everything I need come in the kit?+

It depends on the kit, so check the "Kit includes" list on each product page. Our Missouri Star kits come with scissors, a hoop, needles and floss. Some smaller kits include only the printed fabric, floss and a needle. Hoops aren't included with the Honeybees sampler, for example. Finishing supplies for stuffed or framed pieces, like backing fabric or stuffing, are usually extra. Reviewers most often wish they'd added a hoop or a pair of embroidery scissors.

Do punch needle kits include the punch needle?+

Not always. Our Kimberbell punch needle frame kits include the punch needle tool, a stretched monk's cloth frame and yarn. Many of the 6" hoop punch needle kits (Bee, Poppies, Gnome, Lighthouse and others) include the pre-printed cloth, yarn and hoop, but the punch needle tool is sold separately. Check the listing before you start.

How do Peel & Stitch (stick-and-stitch) designs work?+

The design is printed on a water-soluble sheet. Peel off the backing, stick it to your fabric, stitch right through it, then rinse the sheet away in water. You can stitch on a tea towel, a quilt block or a denim jacket without tracing anything. If a sheet won't hold on a textured fabric, a dab of fabric glue stick keeps it in place.

Are the instructions printed or digital?+

Most kits come with a printed stitch guide or booklet. A few designer kits link to a downloadable guide instead (the Honeybees Embroidery Stitch Sampler is one). Some designers also post stitch videos, so read the product description if you'd rather have paper in hand.
