Fall Fabric by the Yard – Autumn Quilting Cotton
Shop Fall Fabric by the Yard
Fall collections land in late summer and are printed in shorter runs than everyday basics, so the best prints tend to sell through before the leaves actually turn. Everything on this page is 100% quilting cotton sold by the yard, most of it 44"–45" wide, from makers like Robert Kaufman, Henry Glass, Island Batik, Tilda, Marcus Fabrics, P&B Textiles and In the Beginning. You'll also find a few pre-printed fall panels for placemats, aprons and wall hangings, and the occasional full bolt for big backing jobs.
How to Build a Fall Fabric Pull
Start with one focus print – a pumpkin patch, a sunflower toss or a harvest stripe – and pull the rest from its selvage dots. Add a small-scale leaf or acorn print, a tonal in rust or cheddar, and something quiet in cream or oatmeal for the background. A deep green or navy gives the eye somewhere to rest and keeps a fall quilt from turning into a wall of orange. Metallic lines add a little shimmer to a Thanksgiving table runner, and batiks read as blenders that calm busier novelty prints.
Autumn Colors That Last Past Thanksgiving
If you want a quilt that stays out from September through November, lean on colors rather than motifs. Plaids and tonal leaves in rust, gold and brown feel like fall without dating the quilt to a single holiday. Save the turkeys and "give thanks" prints for a runner, pillow or table topper you can swap out when the Christmas fabric comes out.
Yardage, Precuts or Both?
Yardage is the right choice for backing, borders and binding, and for large prints you want to fussy cut. If you'd rather skip the cutting, the same autumn lines are often available as jelly rolls, layer cakes, charm packs and fat quarter bundles in our fall precut fabric. Many quilters do both: a precut for the blocks, then a few yards of the focus print for the border and backing.

Frequently Asked Questions
How much fall fabric do I need for a table runner?
Most table runners need about a yard of fabric for the top, half a yard for backing and a quarter yard for binding. Always check your pattern's supply list, and buy a little extra of the focus print in case you want to fussy cut.
When does new fall fabric come out?
New fall collections start arriving in summer. Because seasonal lines are printed in limited runs, the widest selection is available in late summer, before the season really starts.
Should I prewash fall fabric?
It's up to you. Saturated rusts, reds and deep greens are the colors most likely to bleed, so if you're pairing them with cream or white, either prewash the darks or toss a color catcher in with the finished quilt's first wash.
What colors go with fall fabric?
Cream, oatmeal and tan make easy backgrounds. For accents, try deep green, navy or plum against the classic orange, rust and gold. Brown and cocoa tonals tie busy prints together.
Is this fabric good for quilting?
Yes. Every print here is quilting-weight 100% cotton, the same weight used for piecing, appliqué and backing, so you can mix prints from different fall collections in the same quilt.
