If you had kids with you–stopping to watch was probably not negotiable. And what did the highway and building construction sites have in common–big yellow machines. Cats!

When you look at Caterpillar now, it is hard to believe that it all started with two men who were trying to manufacture a reliable farm tractor. Benjamin Holt invented a steam tractor in 1890 and then–in 1904–changed the rear wheels to tracks. The “caterpillar” was born! At the same time, C. L. Best was working on gasoline and undercarriage technology for his version of a tractor. After WWI these men joined forces to form Caterpillar–the company. In 1931 they adopted the distinctive yellow paint color for all Caterpillar equipment to make it more visible on construction sites. Today Caterpillar is a global company that makes all sorts of heavy construction machinery, hydraulic excavators, engines, turbines, and generators. If there is construction or mining to do or a disaster that must be cleaned-up, you can bet that a Caterpillar machine will probably be on the job.
