At its simplest, a quilt is a blanket. But a quilt can also be a work of art. From the earliest times, scraps of cloth–either leftover from sewing new clothes or salvaged from worn clothing–cut into shapes and sewn together become something whole and beautiful as a quilt top.
Today quilters often purchase designer fabric for their quilt tops. Fabric designers have responded to the demand by creating fabrics in endless colorways and motifs. And quilters have found endless ways to express themselves in the arrangement of colorful pieces of fabric. Some quilters particularly love modern fabrics and contemporary quilt designs. If you are among this group, Missouri Star has got you covered!
Jason Yenter for In the Beginning Fabrics is one designer to investigate if you like contemporary fabric. Jason’s modern fabric collections contain bold geometrics and funky florals, tiny prints and big patterns, bold colors and black-and-whites that all work well together.
Alison Glass has created a line of modern contemporary fabric for Andover Fabric that is pulsing with bright color. Violet Craft’s collection of modern fabric prints for Robert Kaufman is another color infused option. Both of these are available in modern fabric by the yard as well as modern fabric precuts.
Laura Heine for Windham Fabrics and Tula Pink for FreeSpirit Fabrics have designed collections that walk the line between modern and traditional. If you want to flirt with contemporary fabric patterns but not go full-on modern, these would be good designers to check-out.
We have a wonderful assortment of quilt patterns with a modern flair, including many designed by Missouri Star. One favorite is Seeing Spots, a modern jelly roll quilt pattern. You can watch Jenny teach a tutorial on this quilt here. Dakota Sunrise is another Missouri Star pattern with a modern attitude. The theme of the pattern could be accentuated by the use of a contemporary fabric precut Layer Cake. Watch Jenny’s tutorial for Dakota Sunrise here.
The Modern Courthouse is a very interesting pattern for a mini quilt. It was designed by Christopher Thompson for Missouri Star. The quilt requires a Charm Pack of modern fabric patterns. The sample quilt was done with black and white prints on a black background; it is striking.
