What Comes in a Quilt Kit?
Most of our cotton quilt kits include the pattern and all the fabric for the quilt top and binding. Many use precut 5” squares, 2.5” strips or 10” squares, so there’s less cutting before you sew. Backing is usually sold separately, and each listing tells you how many yards you’ll need (a 108” wide back saves you a seam). Batting isn’t included, so pick a quilt batting sized for your project. Cuddle® kits are the exception: most include the backing and binding fabric too.
Quilt Kits for Beginners
A kit is the easiest way to finish your first quilt, because the fabrics are already chosen to go together. Start with a precut kit made from simple squares or strips, or a small wall hanging you can finish in a weekend. Many Missouri Star kits go with one of our free video tutorials, so you can watch each step before you cut. Read the pattern all the way through, check your pieces against the cutting list, and sew a consistent 1/4” seam.

Kits range from table runners and wall hangings to throws and bed quilts. Check the finished size on each listing and compare it to your mattress. Do quilt kits include backing and batting?
Most cotton quilt kits include the pattern plus fabric for the quilt top and binding. Backing is usually sold separately, and the listing gives the yardage you’ll need. Batting isn’t included. Most Cuddle® kits include backing and binding. Check the “kit includes” line on each listing to be sure.
Are quilt kits good for beginners?
Yes. Precut kits built from squares or strips are a good first project, and the fabric is already coordinated for you. Reviewers say clear directions and watching the matching video tutorial first made the biggest difference. If you’re brand new, start with a smaller throw or wall hanging before a bed quilt.
How does a block of the month kit work?
A block of the month subscription ships a new set of blocks and fabric each month, and you sew them as they arrive. Customers say keeping up month to month keeps the final assembly manageable. Complete block of the month kits ship everything at once, so you can work at your own pace.
What if my kit is missing a piece?
When your kit arrives, check the fabrics and pattern against the cutting list before you start cutting. If anything is missing, contact us with your order number and our customer service team will help.
Does Cuddle® fabric shed when you cut it?
Yes, cut minky edges shed fluff at first. Customers recommend tumbling the cut pieces in the dryer on no heat for a few minutes before sewing, using clips instead of pins, and cleaning out your machine’s bobbin area when you’re done.
