Robert Kaufman was a Russian immigrant who came to New York over 100 years ago with a big dream. Despite setbacks like the stock market crash of 1929, World War II, and bouts of poor health in his family, hepersevered and became a successful maker of men’s clothing.
After the war, Robert Kaufman relocated his family to Los Angeles, essentially rebuilding his business from scratch, and yet again, he built a thriving fabric store. By the 1950s, Robert needed help running his business and brought in his sons to help out. They moved away from menswear and began producing and importing specialty fabrics like velvet, plaid, seersucker, chiffon, and satin. In the mid-1970s, they added a line of 100% cotton prints.
Moving into the 1980s, quilting became much more popular and Robert Kaufman saw an opportunity to expand yet again. They began making Robert Kaufman Kona® Cotton Solids and featuring emerging designers like Debra Lunn, Michael Mrowka, and Jennifer Sampou. From that point on, Robert Kaufman fabrics became a fixture in the quilting community with a large family of talented signature artists and a rainbow of colorful basics that set the standard in solid fabrics for quilting.
Robert Kaufman Fabrics now offers the largest stock of basic quilting fabrics like Robert Kaufman Fusions, Kona® Cotton Solids, and Artisan Batiks in addition to popular designer prints from the likes of Valori Wells, Ann Kelle, Lunn Studios, Darlene Zimmerman, and Carolyn Friedlander. Three generations of Kaufmans later, the company is still going strong with fabrics by the yard and Robert Kaufman precut fabrics.
