Robert Kaufman Fabrics is a well-known designer brand amongst quilters. Missouri Star is proud to feature a variety of Robert Kaufman fabric collections, including batiks, prints, and solids, from this reputable and reliable brand.
The History of Robert Kaufman Fabrics
The namesake for the company, Robert Kaufman, was a Russian immigrant who came to New York over 100 years ago with a big dream. Despite setbacks like the stock market crash of 1929, World War II, and bouts of poor health in his family, he persevered and became a successful maker of men’s clothing.
After the war, he relocated his family to Los Angeles, essentially rebuilding his business from scratch, and yet again, he built a thriving fabric store. By the 1950s, Robert needed help running his business and brought in his sons to help out. They moved away from menswear and began producing and importing specialty fabrics like velvet, plaid, seersucker, chiffon, and satin - and so, the Robert Kaufman Fabrics was born! In the mid-1970s, they added a line of 100% cotton prints and have been known for their innovative and unique designs for quilting fabric ever since.
As quilting gained in popularity in the 1980s, Robert Kaufman saw an opportunity to expand yet again. They began making Kona Cotton Solids and featuring emerging designers like Debra Lunn, Michael Mrowka, and Jennifer Sampou. From that point on, Robert Kaufman Fabrics became a fixture in the quilting community, boasting a large family of talented signature artists and a rainbow of colorful basics that sets the standard in solid fabrics for quilting. Three generations of Kaufmans later, the company is still going strong!
Today, Robert Kaufman Fabrics offers the largest stock of basic quilting fabrics like Robert Kaufman Fusions, Kona Cotton Solids, and Artisan Batiks in addition to popular designer prints from the likes of Valori Wells, Ann Kelle, Lunn Studios, Darlene Zimmerman, and Carolyn Friedlander. In most of these collections, you'll find both fabric by the yard and Robert Kaufman precut fabrics to round out your fabric stash.
