What Is Minky Fabric?

Minky is a soft, plush polyester knit with a short pile, and Cuddle® is Shannon Fabrics' name for theirs. It's warm, light, washes well and holds its color, which is why it's become the go-to fabric for baby blankets, stuffed animals and quilt backs. Nearly everything on this page is from Shannon, in a few different textures:

  • Cuddle® Solids – smooth, short-pile minky in dozens of colors, usually 58"–60" wide. Shop Cuddle solids.
  • Cuddle® Prints – animals, florals, plaids and novelty prints for blankets and kids' projects. Shop Cuddle prints.
  • Luxe Cuddle® – a deeper, faux-fur pile in hide, marble and heather looks. Reviewers call it "thick and luxurious."
  • Embossed and dimple – a raised pattern pressed into the pile, popular for baby blankets and backs.
  • Cuddle® Extra Wide – 90" minky, wide enough to back most throw and bed quilts in one piece. See our minky quilt backing.

What to Make with Minky

Our minky reviews are full of the same projects: minky-backed quilts (especially T-shirt quilts and quilts for grandkids), simple serged or self-bound baby blankets, birth-record blankets, reading pillows and stuffed animals. Many quilters say once they've backed a quilt with minky, they don't go back. Looking for a project? Browse our baby quilt patterns.

Tips for Sewing Minky

Minky stretches more in one direction than the other and sheds a little at the cut edges. Reviewers share the same fixes: cut with a rotary cutter, shake or lint-roll the edges, use plenty of pins or clips, lengthen your stitch, and sew with a walking foot. Shannon Cuddle is known for shedding less than other minkys, and it quilts nicely on a longarm. Read our minky fabric guide and Cuddle fabric guide for more.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is minky the same as Cuddle fabric?+

Yes. Minky is the general name for this plush polyester fabric, and Cuddle® is the brand name Shannon Fabrics uses for theirs. Luxe Cuddle® is Shannon's deeper-pile faux fur version.

How wide is minky fabric?+

Most Cuddle® solids and prints are 58"–60" wide, which is plenty for baby quilts and blankets. Cuddle® Extra Wide is 90", so you can back a throw or most bed quilts without piecing. A few Luxe Cuddle® furs come 80" wide.

Do I need batting if I back a quilt with minky?+

Not always. Minky is warm and has some loft of its own, so many quilters skip batting on throws and baby quilts, or use a thin cotton layer in the middle. For a heavier quilt, use a light batting.

How do I keep minky from stretching and shedding?+

Cut with a rotary cutter, then shake or lint-roll the edges outside. Pin or clip generously, lengthen your stitch, and use a walking foot so the layers feed evenly. Don't pull the fabric as you sew, and you'll avoid puckers.

How do I wash minky?+

Wash in cool water on a gentle cycle and tumble dry low, or hang to dry. Skip fabric softener and high heat, which can flatten the pile. Prewashing isn't usually needed, but if you're pairing a deep red or dark minky with a white quilt top, add a color catcher to the first wash.
