Quilt Marking Tools – Fabric Pens, Chalk, Pencils & Stencils

Quilting takes a lot of concentration, so you can’t always rely on your memory to keep track of where a stitch needs to start or stop. That’s what quilt marking tools are for: they put cutting lines, sewing lines and quilting designs right on the fabric, then disappear when you’re done (or stay forever, if you’re signing a label).
Choosing a Fabric Marking Tool
There isn’t one “best” marking tool. The right one depends on your fabric and on how you want the mark to come out. Always test on a scrap first. For a side-by-side comparison, see our guides to the best fabric marking pens, chalk and pounce pads and how to choose the right fabric marking tool.
- Water-soluble pens draw a crisp blue line that wipes away with a damp cloth or a spritz of water. They’re a favorite for quilting designs you’ll stitch over.
- Air-erasable pens fade on their own, usually within a day or two, so mark right before you sew.
- Heat-erasable pens vanish under a hot iron. They’re great for embroidery outlines and binding joins, but not for lines you need after pressing.
- Chalk pencils and chalk liners from Roxanne, Sewline, Prym and Clover brush off easily and show up on dark fabric. Mechanical fabric pencils keep a fine point without sharpening.
- A Hera Marker leaves a crease instead of ink, so there’s nothing to remove.
Shop just pens in fabric pens & markers or just chalk in fabric chalk.
Permanent Pens for Quilt Labels
When you want the mark to last, use a permanent fabric pen. Pigma Micron pens come in tip sizes from .20mm to .50mm plus a brush pen, and the Missouri Star Markers are made for writing on labels and adding hand-drawn details.
Marking Quilting Designs: Stencils and Pounce
Quilting stencils let you mark a cable border, a feather or an all-over stipple without drawing it freehand. We carry Hancy Full Line stencils, Quilting Creations stencils and Say It With Stencils lettering. Lay the stencil down and swipe a chalk pounce pad across it; refills come in white, blue and pink. Quilting on a longarm? Find full-width designs in machine quilting stipples & pantographs.
Marking Half-Square Triangles
The Missouri Star Seam Marker was made with half-square triangles in mind. Line it up corner to corner, draw your sewing line, and your HSTs come out straight without squaring up every one. For longer lines, the Omnigrid Marking Ruler Trio has you covered.
