Sports Fabric for Quilting

Harvard psychologist Howard Gardner was one of the first people to promote the theory that there are multiple kinds of intelligence. One of the types of intelligence Gardner identified is bodily-kinesthetic. People with this type of intelligence have excellent eye-hand and physical coordination, meaning they are good at body movement such as dancing and sports. They learn best by doing, rather than seeing or hearing.

Do you love someone who fits this description? Are they mad about sports? Are they constantly in motion? Dribbling a ball? Kicking a ball? Throwing a ball? Hitting a ball? Running? Biking? Practicing a trick? Ready for any kind of action–if it involves competition it’s even better?

If you want to make a special quilt for the rare times your bodily-kinesthetic genius is resting, Missouri Star has the sports fabric for quilting that you need. Our selection of sports fabric by the yard includes a variety of competitive sports and other fun physical activities.

You'll find baseball fabric, tennis fabric and golf fabric for the athletes who like to pitch, hit, and throw balls. You will also find football fabric, soccer fabric and volleyball fabric for those who prefer tackling, kicking, or setting. For the athletes who like to dribble and dunk, we have basketball fabric prints. And from time to time, we also have fabric for sports that do not require a ball, such as hockey fabric, bicycle fabric, or skateboard fabric.

As designers create new lines, we will continue to add sports fabric to celebrate all of your favorite athletic activities. When working with sports fabric, you will need to consider the scale and color of the prints for the specific project. Some sports fabric prints will work better than others when used in a project using other fabric colors or techniques such as piecework.

So what can you make with sports fabric? There are a range of creative possibilities, but here are a few of our favorite project ideas for sports fabric:

1. Totes and bags featuring your favorite teams or sports motifs.

2. Home decor such as pillows, curtains, or tableware for game day.

3. Pet accessories such as bandanas or pet beds featuring sporty prints.

4. Tech accessories such as laptop sleeves, phone or tablet cases using your favorite sports fabric prints.

5. Aprons and kitchen accessories like pot holders or oven mitts.

6. Bucket hats with a sporty theme.

7. Quilts and stadium blankets (of course!). Get inspired with one of our favorite quilt tutorials featuring sports fabric in the video below.

No matter what, be creative and have fun incorporating sports themes into your sewing projects!
