Sun, rain, and snow are the basics when it comes to weather, but of course our weird and wonderful planet is capable of a lot more creativity than that. Here in Hamilton, Missouri, we’re well-acquainted with the sound of a tornado siren, but there are loads of storms you may never have even heard of:
-
A pogonip is a dense winter fog that actually has ice crystals floating in it. Floating crystals sound pretty, maybe, if you could see them through the fog!
-
A haboob is a thick, violent dust storm. Great name, terrible storm.
-
Graupel is somewhere between fluffy snow and pellet-hard hail. I don’t need a special name for my frozen precipitation to tell me to stay inside.
-
A stormquake is an ocean storm so powerful that it slams into the sea floor and feels like an earthquake!
-
The only one I ever want to be within a hundred miles of is, of course, a sunshower, which is what it’s called when it rains while it’s sunny. I kinda love that.
Today’s stormy deal will sweep you off your feet with intense colors and surreal design.
