Description:

Big Top Circus brings together circus posters, train cars and coordinating prints from the Shelburne Circus collection from Shelburne Museum. Barbara Campbell's 84-by-85-inch quilt begins with a panel of four poster images and builds outward through ten borders. Printed flags, tents and words alternate with solid fabric and pieced sections. Stripe-and-wheel blocks and a final border of diamonds provide additional patchwork around the central panel, with black fabric used for the binding.

Big Top Circus Free Quilt Pattern by Barbara Campbell quilt pattern summary

  1. Prepare the poster panel and cut the border fabrics and template pieces. Add the first five borders in order, measuring the quilt as each border is attached.
  2. Piece the stripe-and-wheel blocks and join them into border strips. Add those strips with their corner squares, followed by the yellow-and-green, word-print and black borders.
  3. Piece the diamond shapes into the final border rows. Sew the side rows to the quilt and add corner squares to the top and bottom rows before attaching them.
  4. Layer the quilt top, batting and backing, quilt as desired, and bind using the black fabric.
