Brick & Mortar Free Pattern by Whistler Studios - Free Quilt Pattern
Brick & Mortar is a miniature quilt that creates an optical illusion with fabric brick faces, tops, and shadows. Turning the finished center upside down changes its appearance, and the design allows you to choose where the darker bricks sit. Whistler Studios uses Somerset Shirtings for the 22½-by-28½-inch project. A border with cornerstones frames the piecing, and the finishing instructions include hanging sleeves at both ends so either orientation can be displayed.

- Make the pieced brick-top and side units, then combine them with the brick faces. Construct the partial bricks needed at the edges of the layout.
- Join the blocks into the illustrated rows and sew the rows together. Attach the borders and their cornerstones around the center.
- Layer and stitch the top, batting, and backing, leaving an opening for turning. Turn, close the opening, quilt, and add hanging sleeves if desired.
