Description:

Color Shift is a 60-by-72-inch quilt designed by Katie Hampton using Lava Solids batiks. The beginner pattern pairs Ink fabric with the other fabrics in diagonally pieced square blocks, then arranges the combinations into five vertical sections. Each section brings together a specified group of fabric pairings, with their placement shown in the quilt layout. Ink is repeated throughout the blocks and used again for the binding around the completed quilt.

Color Shift Free Quilt Pattern by Katie Hampton quilt pattern summary

  1. Cut the squares and binding strips using the fabric chart. Draw a diagonal line on the wrong side of each Ink square before pairing it with the other fabrics.
  2. Place a marked Ink square right sides together with its paired fabric square. Sew on both sides of the diagonal, cut along the line, press open and trim the units to size.
  3. Repeat the block construction for each specified fabric pairing. Arrange the blocks into the grouped vertical sections, following the layout for their order and orientation.
  4. Sew the blocks into the rows that form each section, then join those rows. Sew the five completed vertical sections together to make the quilt top.
  5. Layer the top, batting and backing, then baste and quilt as desired. Finish the quilt with binding made from the Ink fabric strips.
