Easily Snags

I read the fabric was 100% cotton. The fabric feels buttery soft! I used for the backing of a quilt and the fabric snagged about 5 inches across the back of the quilt. I had 75% of the quilting done when I realized the snag had happened. This quilt is a gift and I'm not sure how to cover it or fix it at this point.
