Description:

Frame It builds outward from a central rectangle through twelve successive borders. Narrow strips alternate with wider printed sections, and half-square-triangle units connect selected fabric changes around the center. The construction includes a mitered border option, with an alternative for straight joins. Lisa Swenson Ruble designed this advanced-beginner quilt using BioGeo Energy fabrics by Adrienne Leban. The completed quilt measures 60 by 64 inches, bringing the collection together in a series of nested frames.

Frame It Free Quilt Pattern by Lisa Swenson Ruble quilt pattern summary

  1. Cut the center rectangle and border pieces, labeling each strip with its border number. Prepare the squares for the two sizes of half-square-triangle units.
  2. Sew on both sides of the marked diagonal lines, cut the paired squares apart, and trim the resulting triangle units to the listed sizes.
  3. Build the successive borders around the center, placing the pieced triangle sections and contrasting strips according to the numbered layout.
  4. Attach the wider border with mitered corners, or use the stated straight-join alternative. Add the remaining borders to complete the quilt top.
  5. Join the binding strips, layer and baste the quilt, and quilt as desired. Trim the quilt and finish the binding on the back.
