Description:

Going to America frames a decorative panel with five rounds of borders, including fussy-cut compass motifs and square-in-a-square blocks. Karen Witt’s intermediate-level design features the Explorations collection for Colonial Williamsburg and finishes at 54 by 46 inches. Red compass and spiral-stripe fabrics form the first pieced frame, while small scenes appear in border corners. Blue ship fabric and a blue-and-gold outer print complete the sequence around the central panel.

Going to America Free Quilt Pattern by Karen Witt quilt pattern summary

  1. Fussy-cut and center the decorative panel. Prepare the compass rectangles, scene squares and triangles for the pieced borders, retaining the designated motifs within the cuts.
  2. Piece the first border around the panel, then add the next border strips. Make square-in-a-square units from the fussy-cut compasses and scenes for the third border.
  3. Join the border blocks into the surrounding rows and add the remaining strip borders. Finish by layering, quilting and binding the completed top as desired.
