Description:

Handkerchief Corners combines two block scales to create a square center surrounded by diagonal corner sections. Paired striped fabrics form the small center blocks, while template-cut trapezoids and inset squares create the larger surrounding blocks. Shot cottons provide the setting triangles and inset accents. Kaffe Fassett designed this intermediate quilt to finish at 84 3/4 inches square. The pattern includes a Y-seam construction method and an alternate approach that uses triangle pieces for the larger blocks.

  1. Cut the strips with the stripe direction specified and prepare the setting triangles and accent squares. Check the printed trapezoid template before using it.
  2. Join pairs of striped strips, cut squares and sew them on both sides of a marked diagonal. Cut and press the units to make 144 small blocks.
  3. Piece and template-cut the larger striped units, then set in the accent squares with Y-seams. Use the stated triangle alternative if preferred, completing 132 large blocks.
  4. Join the small blocks in twelve rows of twelve. Assemble the large blocks and setting triangles into diagonal corner sections and sew those around the center.
  5. Prepare the binding, layer and quilt the top, and trim the excess layers. Finish the binding by hand or machine as described.
