Missouri Star Starlight Block of the Month

I made this kit and it was easy to sew has great pictures and directions. I finished the quilt.

This BOM is beautiful. Gorgeous Kaffe fabric, set off by the black background. So far it has been relatively easy. The instructions are clear, and it has been fun getting the monthly packages. If you have never done a BOM before, this one would be a good place to start!

As noted already, the precuts were frequently off, especially the 10" squares. I did not like that they were pinked. A few times I had to use fabric from my stash of Kaffe fat quarters. I didn't like the background fabric and would have preferred either plain black, or the blue on black pattern rather than red. I have become a Kaffe Fassett addict so when I saw this beautiful project I couldn’t get it out of my head! I looked at it for months before enrolling because I was busy with other projects and I had also never done a BOM before. I love working on this project but I do agree with other reviewers that the layer cake fabrics are short cut. I also am grappling with receiving two month’s kits in January after an incorrect shipment in December so I always seem to be behind. I like that with the MSQ...

Kaffe's fabric is wonderful. It has a very nice feel to it. The quilt is stunning but was very challenging to me, not because I've never pieced quilts, but the layouts are very busy and you have to get it just right to correctly make the blocks. I think this pattern needed cutting images.... I'm a visual learner and I finally had to draw out my own visuals for cutting because I kept making mistakes. I persevered and finished the quilt and it was glorious to finally see it!

So I finished my Starlight Block of the Month quilt top a couple of weeks ago and sent it off to a local long arm quilter. I should be getting it back in another week or two. It was both the most challenging quilt top I've tackled to date, and the most stunning. The Kaffe Fossett fabrics chosen for this project were absolutely beautiful. And the quilt has an almost stain glass look to it because of the vibrant colors surrounded by the dark purple and black fabric. Can't wait to get it back!!

I did this BOM because I knew it was going to be a challenge and make me stretch my skill. It did and I love it. Time consuming but oh, so worth it.

I have enjoyed doing this BOM, but I have had problems with some of the fabric quantities, particularly the 10" squares known as "layer cakes". The edges are pinked and they are sometimes too small. I have had to dip into my stashof Kaffe Fat Quarters, and even had to buy some extra fabric. The instructions are excellent. Overall, I will probably not buy another BOM kit.
