Description:

Mod Swirl is an intermediate quilt by Wendy Sheppard featuring Gleaned by Whistler Studios. The finished quilt measures 60 by 84 inches and uses foundation paper piecing. Each block combines two A units and two B units, with fabric placement changing throughout the quilt rather than repeating a single block. Twenty-one blocks are joined in seven rows of three. The pattern includes foundation templates, a basic paper-piecing sequence and row-by-row fabric-placement diagrams.

  1. Cut and label the fabric pieces by their assigned blocks. Print the foundation templates at 100 percent and check the reference squares.
  2. Sew the fabric to each foundation in numerical order, trimming seam allowances and pressing each section open. Trim the completed units and remove the paper.
  3. Combine two A units and two B units into each block. Follow the fabric-placement diagrams to make the 21 individual blocks.
  4. Sew three blocks into each row and join the seven rows. Layer the top with batting and backing, baste and quilt as desired, then bind with the A strips.
