Mountain Sunrise Free Quilt Pattern by Wendy Sheppard
Mountain Sunrise is a 92 x 92 inch medallion quilt designed by Wendy Sheppard with Cassandra Zaniboni’s Rocky Coast collection. The advanced design brings together foundation paper piecing, template work, and curved seams. Four New York Beauty blocks form the center, while additional New York Beauty blocks and smaller pieced blocks build the surrounding borders. Plain fabric borders separate the pieced sections, and a final outer border completes the large square quilt.

Mountain Sunrise Free Quilt Pattern by Wendy Sheppard quilt pattern summary
- Print and check the foundation patterns and templates at the stated scale. Cut the fabric pieces and keep them labeled by the blocks and borders they belong to.
- Paper piece the A, B, and C units and add the curved template pieces to complete the center blocks. Join the four center blocks into the medallion.
- Make the half-square-triangle border blocks, then paper piece the D units and add their template pieces to form the smaller New York Beauty blocks. Follow the listed fabric combinations for each border.
- Build outward from the medallion in the numbered border sequence. Check the orientation of the New York Beauty blocks and the smaller pieced blocks as you attach the side columns and top and bottom rows.
- Add the last plain borders, then layer the top with batting and backing. Baste, quilt as desired, and bind with the designated fabric strips.
