Description:

Starboard is a 78 x 78 inch quilt designed by Natalie Crabtree with Cassandra Zaniboni’s Rocky Coast collection. The intermediate project alternates two block designs: framed fabric centers with corner triangles, and more detailed blocks assembled from flying geese and four-patch units. Five rows of blocks are divided by sashing and small cornerstones. A wide outer border surrounds the square layout, with the binding made from the designated coral red fabric.

Starboard Free Quilt Pattern by Natalie Crabtree quilt pattern summary

  1. Cut the fabric pieces and make the first block style by adding corner triangles and framing strips to the large center squares. Repeat in the listed fabric combinations.
  2. Strip piece the four-patch units and sew the small and large flying geese units. Combine these with the center squares to complete the second block style.
  3. Piece the horizontal sashing rows, then arrange the two block styles in five rows with vertical sashing strips. Join the block rows and horizontal sashing in the illustrated order.
  4. Sew on the outer border, adding the side strips before the top and bottom. Layer with batting and backing, baste, quilt as desired, and bind with the coral red strips.
