Description:

Storybook Explosion uses white fabric and assorted pastel prints to make 120 Zigzag Blocks in a quilt measuring 97 by 112 inches. The blocks are arranged in twelve rows of ten, with white inner borders and a Storybook print around the outside. Stitch-and-flip corners create the mirrored block units. The download also includes a separate Storybook Stars bonus design by Maria Tavy Umhey that uses triangles left over from the main quilt.

Storybook Explosion Free Quilt Pattern by Whistler Studios quilt pattern summary

  1. Cut the white squares, matched pairs of print rectangles, border strips, and binding. Mark a diagonal on the back of each white square.
  2. Sew and flip the white corner triangles on the print rectangles, aligning the points before trimming. Join the mirrored rectangles to make the Zigzag Blocks and save the offcuts for the bonus project.
  3. Arrange the blocks into twelve rows of ten, following the illustrated orientation. Sew the rows, then attach the white inner borders and the printed outer borders.
  4. Layer the backing, batting, and quilt top, baste, and quilt as desired. Bind with the prepared strips; the separate bonus instructions show how to turn the saved triangles into additional blocks.
