Allison Jane Smith’s design uses light Charm Bracelet fat quarters for one hundred small squares arranged in ten rows. Brown and blue fat quarters supply contrasting fabrics, and fusible web holds the applique shapes in position. The bird, leaf and branch templates accompany the pattern, while the finished patchwork background provides the setting for quilting.

- Cut one hundred squares from the light fat quarters and the listed binding strips from the brown fabrics. Lay out the squares in ten rows of ten.
- Sew the squares together in each row, press, then join and press the rows to complete the patchwork background.
- Trace the branch, five leaves and both birds onto fusible web. Press it onto the fabric backs, cut the shapes on the traced lines, arrange and fuse them to the top, then quilt as desired.
