Tin Glaze Free Quilt Pattern by Susan McDermott
Tin Glaze centers an appliqued vase of flowers within pinwheel and diamond-in-a-square patchwork. Susan McDermott’s 44-inch-square design features the Williamsburg Delft collection, with blue and red pinwheels arranged among plain squares. The central applique uses fusible web and zigzag stitching around its edges. The pieced pinwheels and twelve diamond-in-a-square blocks build the surrounding layout, and the materials list gives separate fabric amounts for straight-grain or bias binding.

- Enlarge the applique pattern as directed and cut its flower, stem, leaf and vase pieces. Fuse the arrangement onto the center square and zigzag-stitch its edges with clear polyester thread.
- Piece the light and dark half-square triangle units into pinwheels. Add triangles around the center squares to make the diamond-in-a-square blocks, then cut the plain alternate squares.
- Arrange the pieced and plain blocks around the applique center according to the assembly diagram. Sew the sections together, layer and quilt, then bind using the selected binding method.
