Description:

Wildflower Wings features 18 butterfly blocks in a 32-by-41-inch quilt designed by Lisa DeBee Schiller. Made with Serafina by Whistler Studios, this advanced project calls for needleturn appliqué. The butterflies are arranged in six rows, framed by two inner borders and an outer border. Embroidered antennae add detail to the appliquéd wings and bodies. The pattern includes a butterfly template and freezer-paper instructions for preparing the shapes before stitching them to the backgrounds.

Wildflower Wings Free Quilt Pattern by Lisa DeBee Schiller quilt pattern summary

  1. Print the butterfly template at 100 percent. Prepare freezer-paper wing and body templates, apply them to the fabric and cut with the specified allowance.
  2. Center the wings and then the body on each background rectangle and appliqué them. Trim each butterfly block to 5.5 by 7.5 inches and make 18 blocks.
  3. Join three butterfly blocks into each of six rows, then sew the rows together. Add the two inner borders followed by the outer border.
  4. Embroider the butterfly antennae using a decorative stitch. Layer, baste and quilt the top, then bind with the L strips.
