Quilt Finishing Supplies – Labels, Hangers, Zippers & Bag Hardware
Finishing Touches for Quilts and Bags
The last steps are the ones people see first. A label tells the story of who made a quilt and why, a neat binding frames it, and a good hanger turns a mini quilt into wall art. For bags and pouches, the right zipper and hardware are what make a handmade project look store-bought. We carry hundreds of finishing supplies, so here’s a quick guide by job.
Quilt Labels
Our quilt labels include Missouri Star Labels of Love packs (pre-folded tags plus write-in labels), printed label panels, iron-on Quilt Label Fabric Sheets for inkjet printers, and C&T’s Best-Ever Iron-On Quilt Labels books. Customers sew the small folded tags right into the binding seam and stitch the larger write-on labels to the back of the quilt. The iron-on books are a favorite with quilters who don’t love their handwriting – trace a design onto muslin and color it in with fabric pens or embroidery.
Quilt Hangers
Ackfeld dowel hangers come in seasonal and everyday designs, from hearts and stars to evergreens, and in small sizes that are hard to find for mini quilts, table toppers and wool appliqué. Sew a hanging sleeve or rod pocket to the back of your project and slide the dowel through. For larger quilts, browse all of our quilt hangers and sleeves.
Binding and Bias Tape
Bias tape makers fold perfect, even bias strips as you press, and the Missouri Star Bias Binding Tool Kit gives you four sizes in one box for single-fold and double-fold binding, marked in inches. The Creative Grids Bias Binding Simplified Ruler has markings for cutting 2 1/4" or 2 1/2" bias binding strips, and Binding Babies keep a long length of binding wound and tangle-free while you sew it on. Shop the full range in quilting bias binding.
Zippers and Bag Hardware
Zippers by the yard from Sallie Tomato and ByAnnie let you cut exactly the length your pattern calls for and add the pulls yourself. Missouri Star Fancy Zips have decorative edges that are made to show, not hide. Find every size in zippers, then match D-rings, rectangle rings, sliders and swivel snap hooks to your strap width in bag and purse hardware. Tula Pink webbing, ByAnnie fold-over elastic and mesh round out the bag-making shelf.
Quilt Finishing Supplies FAQs
How do I attach a quilt label?
Most quilters hand stitch a fabric label to the back of the quilt with a blind stitch, usually in a bottom corner. Small folded tags can be tucked into the binding seam before you sew the binding down, so they’re caught in the seam. Iron-on label designs are transferred to muslin or light fabric first, then stitched on like any other label.
How do I hang a quilt with a dowel hanger?
Sew a hanging sleeve (rod pocket) across the top of the back of your quilt and slide the dowel through. Reviewers suggest placing the sleeve a little lower if you want the quilt to hang just below a decorative topper like a star. Measure your project’s width first, since the dowel should be about as wide as the quilt.
Should I buy zippers by the yard or pre-cut zippers?
Zippers by the yard are the most flexible choice for bag making. You cut the length you need and slide on the pulls, and one 4-yard pack can cover a bag and its matching pouches. Pre-cut zippers like our 14" and 24" Fancy Zips are quicker for one-off pouches. Fancy Zips have decorative designs along the tape edges, so they look best where the tape shows.
What size D-rings and swivel hooks do I need?
Match the inside width of the ring or hook to the width of your strap or webbing. A 1" strap needs 1" hardware, and 1 1/2" webbing needs 1 1/2" rings and sliders. Your bag pattern will list the sizes it calls for.
What’s the difference between a bias tape maker and a bias binding ruler?
A bias tape maker folds the edges of a fabric strip as you pull it through and press, giving you even single-fold bias tape for appliqué, stems and trims. A bias binding ruler helps you cut accurate bias strips for binding, which stretch around curved or scalloped quilt edges. Check the strip width each tool takes before you cut. The largest tool in our Bias Binding Tool Kit takes 2" strips, so it won’t fold standard 2 1/2" binding.
