What is a honey bun?
A honey bun is a bundle of 1.5" precut fabric strips, each cut across the full width of the fabric (usually 42–44" long) and rolled up like a pastry. They are the narrowest of the common strip precuts: a jelly roll is 2.5" strips, a honey bun is 1.5". Because every strip is already cut straight and to size, you skip the rotary cutter and go straight to sewing.
Why "honey buns"?
"Honey Bun" is the name Moda Fabrics gave its 1.5" strip rolls, and quilters (and Jenny, in years of tutorials) have used it for any 1.5" roll ever since. Other manufacturers use their own names for the same precut:
Skinny Strips – Kona Cotton solids by Robert Kaufman
Micro Strips – Colorworks Premium Solids by Northcott
Strip count varies by manufacturer and line, so check the product page for the exact number of strips in each roll.
What to make with honey bun strips
Honey buns shine anywhere you want a thin line of color. A 1.5" strip finishes at 1" wide once you sew a ¼" seam on each side, which makes it ideal for:
Sashing – give your blocks breathing room, or size up a smaller quilt, without the bulk of a 2.5" strip.
Log cabin and pineapple blocks – the narrow rounds are what give these blocks their classic look.
Framed blocks and borders – a skinny frame around a charm square or a thin inner border before the binding.
Skinny-strip quilts – stair step, fields and furrows, bow tie and other strip-pieced designs.

One of the most popular quilts to make with honey bun strips is a log cabin. In this video, Jenny shows how easy the Log Cabin Quilt Block is with honey bun (or jelly roll) strips:

Honey bun FAQ
How wide is a finished honey bun strip?+ Honey bun strips are cut 1.5" wide. After sewing a ¼" seam on both long edges, each strip finishes at 1" wide in your quilt.
What's the difference between a honey bun and a jelly roll?+ Width. Honey bun strips are 1.5" and finish at 1"; jelly roll strips are 2.5" and finish at 2". Both are cut across the full width of the fabric, and many patterns (like the log cabin) work with either – the honey bun version just comes out smaller and more delicate.
How many honey buns do I need for sashing?+ It depends on your quilt size and block layout, but one roll usually covers the sashing on a throw-size quilt, and two rolls give you room to size up a bed quilt. Add up the length of every sashing strip in your layout and compare it with the number of strips in the roll times the fabric width.
Can I cut my own 1.5" strips?+ Yes. Fold your fabric selvage to selvage, square up one edge, and cut 1.5" strips across the width with a rotary cutter and ruler. A precut honey bun saves that cutting time and gives you perfectly matched strips.
Why are most honey buns solid colors?+ Narrow strips work best as sashing, frames and backgrounds, where a solid color reads cleanly. That's why solid lines like Kona Cotton and Colorworks offer 1.5" rolls in neutrals such as white, snow, eggshell, ash and black.
