Shop Valentine's Day Fabric by the Yard

Valentine collections usually land in late fall and are printed in short runs, so the most popular heart prints often sell out before February. Almost everything on this page is 100% quilting cotton sold by the yard, most of it 44"–45" wide, from makers like Robert Kaufman, Marcus Fabrics, Clothworks, Benartex and Northcott. You'll also find a few 2-yard cuts, a heart-embossed Cuddle minky for soft backings, and the occasional Valentine jelly roll or fat quarter bundle when a line comes in precut.

How to Build a Valentine Fabric Pull

Start with one focus print, like a tossed-heart, rose or love-letter design, and pull the rest from the colors in its selvage. Add a small-scale heart or dot that reads almost solid from a few feet away, a tonal red, and a soft pink. Then give the eye a place to rest with a cream or white background. A touch of black makes pinks and reds pop and looks a bit more grown-up. Vintage-style lines with faded reds and creams mix well with reproduction prints already in your stash.

Beyond Pink and Red

A Valentine quilt doesn't have to shout. Cream-ground florals, blush tonals and text prints can stay on the couch long after February 14th. Save the "be mine" and lips novelty prints for a table runner, placemats, a pillow or a mug rug that comes out once a year. Customers tell us they use Valentine yardage for zipper pouches, project bags and table toppers as often as for full quilts.

Yardage, Precuts or Both?

Yardage is the right choice for backing, borders, binding and big prints you want to fussy cut. Many quilters do both: they use a charm pack or layer cake for the hearts, then buy a few yards of the focus print for the border and backing. Frequently Asked Questions

Should I prewash red Valentine fabric?+

Saturated reds are the colors most likely to bleed, and customers do mention it in their reviews. If you're pairing red with white or cream, either prewash the reds or add a color catcher to the finished quilt's first wash.

How much fabric do I need for a Valentine table runner?+

Most table runners need about a yard of fabric for the top, half a yard for backing and a quarter yard for binding. A single jelly roll often makes a runner and a set of placemats. Always check your pattern's supply list, and buy a little extra of the focus print in case you want to fussy cut.

When does new Valentine fabric come out?+

New Valentine collections start arriving in late fall. Seasonal lines are printed in limited runs, so you'll find the widest selection between November and early January, before the February rush.

What colors go with Valentine fabric?+

Cream, white and soft blush make easy backgrounds. For accents, try black, gray or a little gold against classic red and pink. A low-volume text print or a tiny dot is a good way to tie busy heart prints together.

What is a 2-yard cut?+

A 2-yard cut is a precut piece of yardage, two continuous yards off the bolt. It's enough for a table runner and its backing, a few pillows, or the border and binding on a lap quilt, and it's often the easiest way to buy a focus print.
