A Quilter’s Guide to Winter Joy

The weeks and months leading up to Christmas are a busy time for quilters and crafters. Making gifts is sometimes hectic, but also enjoyable and satisfying! Maybe you're sewing with holiday music in the background. Maybe you're creating while looking out the window at softly falling snow. You're almost certainly thinking fondly of the person who will receive your creation. Then, seeing the happy expressions on the faces of recipients brings joy to you as the creator!

But the weeks after Christmas can be another story. Hands that were busy are now idle. Holiday get-togethers with family and friends are over. Festive decorations disappear. There are no twinkling lights bringing cheer to the long hours of wintertime darkness.

So, what's a creative person to do? Find what brings you joy! Take this person's situation, for example:

'Twas a week after Christmas, and my spirits did crash,
with my mood just as low as my post-holiday cash.
The stockings were ripped down and stuffed in a box
as the clock slowed to a crawl, sounding drawn-out tick tocks.
And I in my PJs, with a dog on my lap
had just settled in and poured a nightcap.
When deep in my head, I heard a voice chatter,
“So Christmas is over. What does it matter?
Joy isn't confined to just one time of year.
You know creating will bring you some cheer."
Then more voices chimed in (I have quite a few),
“Get yourself together, girl. You know what to do.
Start projects. Create. Get busy designing.
Make something from nature. Crochet. Quit whining.
Sew a quilt for the bed or paint art for the wall.
Just craft away, craft away, craft away, all!
-Debbie Holterman

Whether you quilt, embroider, crochet, knit, or pursue other creative endeavors, remember to keep your spirits up by immersing yourself in the craft that brings you joy! The things you make now could be gifts for next year!
