Disappearing 4 Patch Quilt Tutorial: Jenny Doan's Quick Charm Pack Block

What happens when you take a simple four-patch block — one of the very first blocks every quilter learns — and give it a surprising twist? You get the Disappearing 4 Patch, a clever technique that transforms basic squares into an intricate, professional-looking design. In this fan-favorite tutorial with over 1 million views, Jenny Doan shows how a few strategic cuts can make the ordinary truly extraordinary.

This is one of those projects that looks incredibly complex on the finished quilt but is actually simple enough for a confident beginner. All you need are two charm packs and a willingness to trust the magic of the "disappearing" technique. Let Jenny walk you through it!

What Is a Disappearing 4 Patch?

The Disappearing 4 Patch starts life as a regular four-patch block — four squares sewn together in a 2×2 grid. But here's the twist: after sewing the four-patch, you make cuts through the block (1 inch away from each seam line on all four sides), creating smaller pieces that you then rearrange and re-sew into a completely new design.

The "disappearing" part refers to what happens to the original four-patch layout — it vanishes! In its place, you get a block with an intricate interlocking pattern of rectangles and small squares that looks like it took hours of precise piecing. The secret? It's just cutting and rearranging. Jenny makes it feel like a magic trick, and honestly, it kind of is.

What You'll Need

🧵 1 Charm Pack of printed fabric (5" squares) — for the patterned pieces. Shop charm packs here.

🤍 1 Charm Pack of solid fabric (5" squares) — for contrast.

✂️ Rotary cutter, ruler & cutting mat — essential for precise ¼" cuts. Shop rotary cutters.

🔄 Spinning cutting mat (recommended) — makes the four-sided cuts much easier. Shop quilting cutting mats.

📌 Pins — for nesting seams. Shop pins & clips.

Step-by-Step Instructions

Step 1: Pair and Sew Your Charm Squares

Take 2 printed charm squares and 2 solid charm squares. Pair each print with a solid, placing them right sides together. Sew down one side with a ¼" seam allowance. Jenny chain-pieces for speed — feed one pair through the machine and immediately feed the next one in behind it without cutting the thread.

Clip the pairs apart and press the seams toward the dark (printed) side. This prevents the seam allowance from showing through the lighter solid fabric.

Jenny's tip: "I like to iron mine so that the seam is going to end up on the dark side. If you lay your dark piece on top and iron that, just roll it back. Whenever you're using solid fabric or light fabric, you don't want this seam part to show through."

Step 2: Assemble the Four-Patch

Arrange your two pairs into a classic four-patch layout — printed squares diagonal from each other, solid squares diagonal from each other (like a checkerboard). Since you pressed the seams toward the dark side, the seam allowances will nest together beautifully, giving you a perfect center intersection.

Sew the two pairs together along the center seam. Press this seam open. You should have a nice, flat four-patch with a tight center point.

Jenny's tip: "Since we've pressed both those seams to the dark side, we can nestle them right up together and this will make a perfect four patch with a nice little close center."

Step 3: Make the Disappearing Cuts

This is where the magic happens! Place your four-patch on the cutting mat and position your ruler so the 1-inch line aligns with the seam. Make a cut. Do not move the pieces! Rotate your cutting mat 90 degrees and cut again — 1 inch from the next seam. Repeat for all four sides.

You'll end up with 9 pieces: 4 corner pieces, 4 edge pieces, and 1 center piece. A spinning cutting mat makes this step much easier since you don't have to shift the pieces around.

Jenny's tip: "This is where those handy little spinning mats come in really handy because you don't want to move all your little pieces, you just want to be able to make your cuts and turn."

Jenny demonstrates the cuts that transform a simple four-patch into something extraordinary!

Step 4: Rearrange the Pieces

Now for the fun part — take those 4 corner pieces and rotate each one 180 degrees. The edge pieces and center stay where they are. When you turn those corners, the pattern transforms completely! What was a simple four-patch now has an interlocking, woven look that appears far more complex than the original block.

Take a moment to admire what just happened — it really does feel like a magic trick.

Step 5: Sew the Block Back Together

Sew the 9 pieces back together in rows: sew the 3 pieces in each row together, press the seams, then join the 3 rows together. Press well. Your disappearing four-patch block is complete!

Repeat the entire process — pairing, sewing the four-patch, cutting, rearranging, and re-sewing — to create as many blocks as you need for your quilt.

Step 6: Assemble the Quilt Top

Arrange your finished blocks on your design wall or floor. The beauty of this pattern is that every block looks great next to every other block — there's no wrong arrangement! Sew the blocks together in rows, press the seams of alternating rows in opposite directions, then join the rows together. Add batting, backing, quilt, and bind to finish.

Pro Tips for the Disappearing 4 Patch

  • Don't move the pieces after cutting — use a spinning mat or carefully rotate the entire mat. Shifting pieces is the #1 way to mix them up and lose the pattern.
  • High contrast is key — The disappearing effect is most dramatic when your two fabrics are very different in value (light vs. dark). Low-contrast fabrics will blend together and lose the interlocking look.
  • Press to the dark side — Pressing seams toward darker fabric prevents show-through and ensures clean nesting when you sew blocks together.
  • Measure the 1-inch cut carefully — The distance from the seam line to your cut determines the final proportions. Exactly 1 inch gives you the best visual balance with 5" charm squares.
  • Chain piece for efficiency — When making many blocks, feed pairs through the machine in a continuous chain. It saves thread, time, and your sanity!
  • Try it with larger squares — The technique works with 10" layer cake squares too. Use a 2-inch cut distance instead of 1 inch for proportional results.

Ready to Make Magic?

The disappearing four-patch is one of those rare quilt blocks that's just as fun to make as it is to admire. That moment when you rotate the corner pieces and see the new pattern emerge? Pure quilting joy. Grab two charm packs and give it a try — we promise you'll be hooked after the very first block!
