Why 90" Wide Backing?
Standard quilting cotton is about 42" wide, so anything bigger than a baby quilt means sewing two or three lengths together for the back. A 90" wide backing skips that step. You buy one length, lay it out, and you're ready to baste. No seam to line up, no extra bulk under the quilting and no wasted yardage from trimming pieced panels.
What's on This Page
This collection is for backing fabric that is 90" wide, whatever it's made of. Today that's Shannon Cuddle® Extra Wide: a 100% polyester minky with a 3mm pile, sold by the yard at 88"–90" wide. It makes a quilt you'll want to curl up under, and it's also great for throws, baby blankets and pet beds. When we carry 90" fabrics in other materials, they'll appear here too.
Looking for the whole range of minky widths, including 60"? See Minky Quilt Backing. For cotton prints and solids in 108" and wider, shop Wide Quilt Backing Fabrics.
How to Size a 90" Backing
Add 4" on every side of your quilt top, so 8" to the width and 8" to the length. Plan on about 88" of usable width. If the narrow side of your quilt plus 8" fits in 88", one length will do. That means quilt tops up to about 80" across. Then buy enough to cover the long side plus 8", divide by 36 and round up to the next quarter yard. Not sure? Our backing yardage calculator does the math for you.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is 90" quilt backing really 90 inches wide?+
Cuddle® Extra Wide is listed at 88"–90" wide. Selvages and a little trimming eat into that, so plan your backing with about 88" of usable width.
What size quilt can I back with 90" wide fabric?+
Any quilt top up to about 80" on its narrow side, which covers throws, lap quilts and twins. A full-size top (about 84" × 90") needs a 92" × 98" backing, which is too wide for 90" fabric. For those, go with 108" wide backing.
How much 90" backing do I need for a twin quilt?+
A typical twin top is about 70" × 90". Add 8" to each side to get 78" × 98". The 78" side fits across the fabric's width, so you need 98" of length. That's 98 ÷ 36 = 2.72, or 2¾ yards.
Do you carry 90" cotton or flannel backing?+
Our 90" wide backing is all Cuddle® minky right now. For cotton, check our wide quilt backing fabrics, which are mostly 108" wide and work for even bigger quilts.
Any tips for quilting with a minky backing?+
Minky stretches and sheds a little at the cut edges. Use a walking foot and a 90/14 stretch needle, and pin or clip more than you would with cotton. Lengthen your stitch slightly and keep a hot iron off the pile. Our Shannon Cuddle® fabric guide walks through it step by step.
