Why Quilters Use 100% Cotton

Quilting cotton is the standard for a reason. It's a medium-weight plain weave that cuts cleanly, holds a crisp ¼" seam, presses flat and stays put while you sew. It's breathable, it washes well, and it softens over years of use, which is why the quilts made with it get handed down. Most quilting cotton is about 44"–45" wide.

What You'll Find in Our Cotton Fabric

  • Prints – florals, novelty, holiday and blender prints from current collections, from tiny ditsies to big focus prints.
  • Solids – Kona Cotton, Colorworks and more for backgrounds, sashing and binding. Shop Kona solids or all solid quilting fabric.
  • Batiks – tightly woven, hand-dyed cotton with rich, mottled color from Island Batik and others.
  • Wide backing – 108" cotton for backing a quilt in one piece. Shop wide quilt backing.
  • Muslin and canvas – plain muslin for backgrounds and practice blocks, and heavier canvas for bags.

How to Spot Good Quilting Cotton

Shopping online means you can't feel the bolt, so look for a few things. Quality quilting cotton has a tight, even weave that isn't see-through when you hold it up to the light. The color goes through to the back instead of sitting on the surface, and it comes from an established quilting mill. Cheaper cottons are often thinner, fray more and shrink unevenly.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is cotton fabric by the yard sold?+

Our yardage is priced by the quarter yard. Add 4 to your cart for one yard, 8 for two yards, and so on, and it's cut in one continuous piece.

Should I prewash quilting cotton?+

It's a personal choice. Prewashing removes sizing and any extra dye and pre-shrinks the fabric. Many quilters skip it and wash the finished quilt for a soft, crinkly look. If you're pairing deep reds or navy with white, prewash those or add a color catcher to the first wash.

How much does quilting cotton shrink?+

Usually around 2–5%, depending on the fabric and how hot you wash and dry it. If you mix prewashed and unwashed fabric in one quilt, the unwashed pieces can pucker after the first wash, so treat all your fabric the same way.

What's the difference between quilting cotton and apparel cotton?+

Quilting cotton is a medium-weight, stable plain weave made for piecing. Apparel cottons like lawn, voile and chambray are lighter, with more drape for clothing. For garment fabric, shop our apparel fabric by the yard.

How much fabric do I need for a quilt?+

It depends on the pattern and size. As a rough guide, a lap quilt top takes 4–6 yards, a queen 8–12 yards, plus backing and binding. Your pattern's supply list will give exact amounts.
