The half square triangle (HST) is the Swiss Army knife of quilting — one simple block, endless possibilities. Arrange HSTs into pinwheels, herringbone, chevrons, diamonds, or stars. Rotate them for an entirely different design. Tips for Perfect Half Square Triangles

Cut slightly oversize, then trim. Adding ½" to your starting squares lets you trim HSTs to exact size after pressing — the single best trick for sharp points.

Press to the dark side. Pressing seams toward the darker fabric reduces show-through and makes nesting seams easier when joining blocks.

Use an HST-specific ruler. A quilting ruler with a diagonal line makes squaring up fast and accurate. Pair it with a 45mm rotary cutter for clean cuts every time.
