What Is a Jelly Roll?
A jelly roll is a bundle of precut fabric strips, each 2.5" wide and cut selvage to selvage (about 42"–44" long). Most jelly rolls have 40 strips, which works out to roughly 2¾ yards of fabric. The strips come from a single fabric line, rolled up tight like the pastry, so every print and color in the bundle already goes together. Some rolls repeat a few prints; the product description tells you the exact count.
Why Quilters Love Jelly Rolls
No cutting. The strips are already cut straight and to size, so you can sit down and start sewing. Strip piecing, log cabins, binding and sashing all start from a 2.5" strip anyway.
No color guesswork. The designer has already matched the whole collection for you. That's why jelly rolls are such a good first project for new quilters, and a quick finish for experienced ones.
Lots of variety for the money. One roll gives you small cuts of the whole fabric line, so you get far more prints than buying yardage one print at a time.

How many strips are in a jelly roll?
Most jelly rolls have 40 strips of 2.5" x 42"–44" fabric. A few are smaller (some Rolie Polies are 20 strips) or have 41–42. Check the product description for the exact count.
How much fabric is in a jelly roll?
A 40-strip roll is about 2¾ yards of fabric in total (40 strips x 2.5" = 100").
How many jelly rolls do I need for a quilt?
One jelly roll usually makes a lap-size quilt top. A jelly roll race quilt from one roll finishes around 50" x 64". For twin or queen, plan on two or more rolls, depending on the pattern. Borders and binding usually need extra yardage.
Should I prewash a jelly roll?
We don't recommend it. Precut strips can fray and shrink unevenly in the wash. If you're worried about dark colors bleeding, add a color-catcher sheet when you wash the finished quilt.
What's the difference between a jelly roll, a charm pack and a layer cake?
They're all precut bundles from one fabric line. Jelly rolls are 2.5" strips, charm packs are 5" squares, and layer cakes are 10" squares.
